CurrentReport Blog In a significant move to address mental health concerns within Calabar, the Cross River Government has begun the evacuation of mentally challenged individuals from the state capital. This initiative, spearheaded by the Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA), is part of a comprehensive plan to rehabilitate and reintegrate affected individuals into society.

Effiong Ayi, the Executive Director of CUDA, highlighted the proactive nature of this exercise during a press briefing on Wednesday. He noted that the initiative was launched following the recent inauguration of a mental holding center by Governor Bassey Otu, marking his administration’s one-year anniversary. The holding center has already registered over 30 inmates since the commencement of the evacuation on Monday.

“The primary goal of this exercise is to eliminate the large presence of mentally challenged individuals in our metropolis and facilitate their rehabilitation, enabling them to lead productive lives in our society,” Ayi stated. He emphasized the urgent need for the operation due to the growing number of mentally challenged individuals causing disturbances within the city.

The mental holding center, a newly completed facility, plays a crucial role in this initiative. Equipped with essential amenities such as a standby generator, water supply, and cooking facilities, the center is designed to provide a supportive environment for the inmates.

Addressing the rehabilitation process, Ayi explained, “They will be provided with the care and treatment they require, and once they regain sanity, they will be reintegrated into society.” This approach not only aims to resolve immediate concerns but also aligns with best practices for maintaining public health and safety in the metropolis.

The government’s initiative reflects a significant step towards improving public health and safety in Calabar. By providing necessary support and rehabilitation, the state aims to ensure that mentally challenged individuals receive the care they need to reintegrate successfully into the community.
