CurrentReport Blog On Thursday, Dangote Group refuted claims that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has commenced lifting petrol from its refinery. The reports alleged that NNPCL lifted fuel from the Dangote Refinery and sold it to Nigerians at ₦897 per liter.
This development came on the heels of recent statements by the Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, who declared that the refinery was ready to begin production and sale of petroleum products.
However, Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer of Dangote Group, dismissed the claims in an official statement. He clarified:
“Our attention has been drawn to a headline, ‘NNPCL lifts Dangote petrol, sells at ₦897 per liter’, published in the Business Day Newspaper on Wednesday, 4th September 2024.
“We would like to state that NNPC has not commenced lifting of refined Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, from our Dangote Petroleum Refinery.”
Chiejina further explained that the contract between Dangote Refinery and NNPCL had yet to be finalized. He stressed that pricing of petroleum products remains regulated by the government, meaning that Dangote Refinery has no role in setting or influencing fuel prices.
“The PMS market is strictly regulated, which is known to all oil marketers and stakeholders in the sector. Therefore, we cannot determine, fix, or influence the product price, which falls under the purview of relevant government authorities,” Chiejina stated.
