CurrentReport Blog Former Senate President, David Mark, has strongly condemned the recent wave of violent attacks by suspected armed herdsmen on several communities across Benue State. The attacks, which have led to numerous deaths and the destruction of property worth billions of naira, have affected various local government areas, including Otukpo, Agatu, Apa, Ohimini, Okpokwu, Ado, Ogbadibo, Gwer-West, Gwer-East, Katsina-Ala, Logo, and Ukum.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Senator Mark expressed deep concern over the devastating impact of the attacks. He recounted a recent incident in Gwer-West, where killings led to protests by local youths, and highlighted the loss of multiple lives and the abduction of others in the Otukpo axis just last week.

While acknowledging some progress by security operatives in addressing the crisis, Mark urged that justice be swiftly served. He commended the arrest of some of the perpetrators by security agents and called for a thorough investigation to ensure that all those involved, directly or indirectly, are held accountable.

Mark stated, “I urge all concerned to do a diligent investigation and ensure that all the people immediately and remotely involved should be made to face the full wrath of the law.”

He also appealed to communities across Benue to remain vigilant and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to prevent further violence. “I also call on the youths in our various communities to ensure vigilance and report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement agencies,” he added.

In addition to his call for action, Mark stressed the importance of restraint and unity, warning against ethnic profiling or retaliatory violence. “There should be no stereotyping of any ethnic group or reprisal attacks on any group of people due to these unfortunate incidents,” he said.

Senator Mark extended his condolences to the victims’ families, stating, “I commiserate with those who lost their loved ones at the hands of the marauders. May their souls rest in peace.”
