CURRENT REPORT BLOG In a tragic turn of events, Zurmi town, the headquarters of Zurmi Local Government Area in Zamfara State, Nigeria, fell victim to a ruthless assault by armed bandits.
Reports reveal a harrowing scene, with no fewer than seven individuals feared dead, including a police officer, as the bandits laid siege to the divisional headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horror of the attack, with Babangida Zurmi expressing his anguish over the inability to contact his relatives amidst the chaos.
“As we speak now, I can’t get in touch with anybody in the town, their numbers are switched off. That means the bandits are still around. We need help from relevant authorities,” Zurmi lamented, highlighting the urgent need for intervention to quell the ongoing violence.
The assault appears to be driven by a mission of reprisal, as sources indicate that the bandits targeted the town in retaliation for the killing of two individuals by local vigilantes.
The rampage resulted in the loss of lives, the destruction of property, and the burning of several shops, further exacerbating the plight of the affected community.
Tragically, the violence extended beyond Zurmi, as another group of bandits struck in the Maradun Local Government Area, claiming four lives and abducting several others. The innocent victims fell prey to the bandits’ indiscriminate gunfire while clearing bushes along the road, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the attacks and the pervasive threat posed by these criminal elements.
Yazid Abubakar, the spokesperson for the police in Zamfara State, confirmed the attacks, though details are still emerging, indicating the fluid and precarious security situation in the region.
