CurrentReport Blog In the spirit of Ramadan, Chief Imam Dr. Tajudeen Adebayo of Falomo Lagos Central Mosque emphasizes the importance of respecting the fasting Muslim community by refraining from eating in their presence. Adebayo stresses that eating in public during fasting hours not only undermines the sanctity of the ritual but also potentially discourages others from participating in the self-denial practice.
Adebayo’s remarks come in response to recent incidents, including the arrest of individuals by Hisbah, the Islamic Police in Kano, for public consumption during fasting hours. The arrests, prompted by tip-offs from concerned citizens, highlight the significance of upholding Ramadan traditions and respecting those who observe them.
In an ideal Islamic environment, fasting during Ramadan is regarded as sacred and deserving of reverence from all members of society.
“Fasting is mandatory for every mature healthy Muslim who’s not on a journey.
“Exempted from fasting are sick people, travellers, the elderly, pregnant and breastfeeding women who can’t bear it.
“Women who are experiencing their monthly flow or childbirth blood are exempted too.
“It’s courteous for others to respect the sensibility of those who are fasting by not eating publicly.” Adebayo said.
