CurrentReport Blog Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate dissolution of all governing councils of state-owned tertiary institutions and the removal of management staff of Edo Specialist Hospital and Stella Obasanjo Hospital.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Musa Umar Ikhilor, and released by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, in Benin City.

Dissolution of Governing Councils

The statement confirmed the dissolution of the governing councils of all state-owned tertiary institutions, including Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma. The governor directed affected council members to hand over government properties in their possession to their respective institution heads.

“It is hereby announced… that the Governor of Edo State… has approved the dissolution of the Governing Councils of all State-owned Tertiary Institutions with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Hospital Management Overhaul

Governor Okpebholo also terminated the appointments of the management staff of Edo Specialist Hospital and Stella Obasanjo Hospital. The affected staff members were instructed to hand over to the most senior officers in their respective institutions.

“This disengagement is effective immediately,” the statement emphasized, citing the need for a comprehensive review of the hospitals’ operations.

Background to the Decision

The move aligns with recommendations made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) transition committee before Governor Okpebholo’s swearing-in on November 12, 2024. The committee had called for a review of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the hospitals’ management and the immediate past government.

The governor’s actions signal a commitment to restructuring key sectors in Edo State, with the aim of improving governance and service delivery in education and healthcare.
