CurrentReport Blog Political stakeholders in Edo State have cautioned Governor Godwin Obaseki against last-minute recruitments, contract awards, and appointments before he leaves office. This warning follows Obaseki’s candidate Asue Ighodalo’s defeat in the recent governorship election by APC candidate Senator Monday Okpebholo. The leaders, representing all three Edo senatorial districts, expressed concerns that Obaseki’s actions could disrupt a smooth transition for the incoming administration.
Through the pro-democracy group Initiative for Democratic Advancement and Free Speech, stakeholders, including Executive Director Patrick Osaigbovo (Edo South), Director of Research Andrew Isewele (Edo Central), and Director of Mobilization Kamaru Momoh (Edo North), voiced their opposition, stating that any actions taken by Obaseki since September 21, 2024, may be disregarded by Okpebholo’s administration.
They urged the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, other traditional and religious leaders, as well as anti-graft agencies and law enforcement, to monitor and potentially intervene in the state’s affairs as Obaseki’s term concludes. The leaders alleged that Obaseki’s administration has been involved in asset removal and other controversial activities, calling on the Inspector-General of Police to act against any supporters found with government property.
The statement concluded, “Edo leaders and stakeholders are deeply concerned by Governor Obaseki’s recent moves, which appear to hinder the peaceful transition expected by the people of Edo State.”
