CurrentReport Blog Benin City, Nigeria — In his final days in office, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has exercised his prerogative of mercy by granting clemency to 10 inmates in various correctional centers across Edo State. These pardons were given to inmates with less than one year left to serve in their sentences, bringing renewed hope to those impacted.
The announcement came from Justice P.O. Isibor (rtd), Chairman of the Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. On Monday in Benin City, Justice Isibor confirmed the list of pardoned individuals, which includes Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, Gift Osaretun, Takyi Rockson, Dikuar Friday, Ossai Glory, Augustine Sunday, Daulagha Ebifagha Godluck, James Paul, and Anas Isah.
According to Justice Isibor, the clemency request followed a letter from the Benin Correctional Service, dated November 5, 2024, and signed by the Controller of the Correctional Centre. This letter sought leniency for inmates who had completed most of their sentences, as part of efforts to reintegrate them into society.
The Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy convened to review and assess each application, making recommendations to Governor Obaseki, who subsequently approved the Council’s suggestions. This act aligns with Governor Obaseki’s approach of utilizing the prerogative of mercy to foster a more rehabilitative approach within the criminal justice system.
