EFCC Arrests Eleven Suspected Illegal Miners in Kwara State, Seizes Truckloads of Minerals

CurrentReport Blog In a decisive crackdown on illegal mining activities, the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested eleven individuals suspected of involvement in illicit mining operations. This operation underscores the EFCC’s ongoing commitment to curbing unlawful exploitation of Nigeria’s rich mineral resources.

On Wednesday, May 5, 2024, acting on credible intelligence, EFCC agents apprehended the suspects at various locations in Ogbomosho, Oyo State. The arrested individuals were in the process of transporting a variety of solid minerals, including marble stone, white powder, lithium, and lepidolite. These minerals were being moved to undisclosed destinations without the required legal authorizations.

The eleven suspects have been identified as:

  1. Ibrahim Gambo
  2. Hakeem Saka
  3. Ahmad Muktar
  4. Sulaiman Ibrahim
  5. Ibrahim Muhammad
  6. Jamiu Mustapha
  7. Rabiu Musa
  8. Aisha Muham
  9. Abdulwasiu Hannafi
  10. Qudus Olalere
  11. Babatunde Hakeem

Their arrests mark a significant step in the EFCC’s intensified efforts to combat illegal mining and other related economic crimes in Nigeria.

In addition to the arrests, the EFCC impounded eight truckloads of assorted minerals. These minerals, suspected to be products of illegal mining operations, include high-value resources like lithium and lepidolite, which are essential components in various industrial applications, including electronics and renewable energy technologies.

According to Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, the suspects are currently under investigation. Once the investigations are concluded, the accused will be arraigned in court to face charges.
