CurrentReport Blog In a swift response to a disturbing incident, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has ordered the immediate arrest of two EFCC officers implicated in a forceful entry into hotel rooms at the Regional Hotel, Ojo, Lagos State. The decision comes on the heels of a viral video that has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability.
The video, circulating widely on social media, shows the officers, dressed in plainclothes, aggressively breaking into a hotel room. Despite a female hotel staff member’s attempt to open the door from the inside, the officers forcibly entered the room. Shockingly, one officer was seen slapping the staff member before ordering her to leave the room. This troubling incident was captured on the hotel’s CCTV system, providing clear evidence of the unauthorized actions.
In a statement addressing the incident, the EFCC has unequivocally condemned the behavior of the officers involved. The Commission has labeled the incident as an unauthorized sting operation, asserting that such conduct does not reflect the standards and protocols of the EFCC. The agency has pledged a thorough investigation and has promised that any officers found culpable will face strict disciplinary actions.
Oyewale, a spokesperson for the EFCC, provided additional context, noting that the events transpired during an early morning sting operation. He mentioned that this operation resulted in the arrest of several suspects, who are currently being profiled.
“The EFCC’s boss has also ordered detailed investigations of the operation carried out at the hotel and assured that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against any of the officers found to be culpable,” Oyewale stated.
Mr. Olukoyede emphasized the EFCC’s commitment to professionalism and adherence to the rule of law. He reassured the public that the agency would continue its mission with integrity and respect for human rights. The incident, he added, underscores the necessity for greater accountability and respect for human rights within Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies.
As the investigation progresses, the EFCC vows to take all necessary steps to ensure justice is served and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
