CurrentReport Blog Interim head coach of the Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen, has shared his thoughts on the performances of Victor Boniface and Kelechi Iheanacho during Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Rwanda. The match, held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Monday, saw both forwards struggle to make an impact despite being part of a heavily rotated starting XI.
Iheanacho Subbed Off at Halftime
Kelechi Iheanacho, who started the game, was substituted at halftime after failing to leave his mark on the match. Speaking about the Leicester City forward, Eguavoen said:
“Kelechi Iheanacho is an asset to the national team; he needs some encouragement. We spoke with him, and I told him he would start and play for 45 minutes.”
Eguavoen emphasized the importance of giving Iheanacho confidence and reiterated his value to the team.
Boniface Struggles to Impress
Victor Boniface, who played 89 minutes, also failed to meet expectations during the encounter. Despite the disappointing outing, Eguavoen reaffirmed his belief in the striker’s potential.
“I have spoken with Boniface several times; I have done enough. He is important to this team,” Eguavoen stated.
Looking Ahead
With the Super Eagles already qualified for the 2025 AFCON, Eguavoen’s squad rotation gave opportunities to several players. However, the lackluster performances of Iheanacho and Boniface highlight the need for improvements ahead of the tournament.
As Nigeria prepares for the upcoming competition, the Super Eagles’ coaching staff will aim to help key players regain their form and deliver consistent performances.
