DSS releases Emefiele to EFCC as interrogation continues

CURRENT REPORT BLOG

On October 26, Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). However, he was swiftly apprehended by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further interrogation. This suggests the possibility of fresh charges being levied against him.

Emefiele had been held by the DSS since June following his suspension from office by President Bola Tinubu. During this period, he was directed to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the former Deputy Governor of the Operations Directorate at the central bank. The DSS had initially cited investigative reasons for holding Emefiele. Subsequently, on July 25, he faced a two-count charge related to the “illegal possession” of firearms in a federal high court in Lagos and was granted bail of N20 million. However, these charges were later withdrawn by the federal government on August 17. Nevertheless, a fresh 20-count charge was brought against him, alleging conspiracy to commit procurement fraud and other offenses.
