CurrentReport Blog In a significant stride towards women’s empowerment, the women of Bauchi State have wholeheartedly embraced adult education, thanks to the unwavering support of their husbands. Recently, a one-day workshop organized by UNICEF, in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), shed light on this inspiring narrative.
The workshop, conducted in partnership with various governmental and non-governmental bodies including the Office of the First Lady, the State Universal Education Board, and the Bauchi State Agency for Mass Education (BASAME), aimed to equip women with the necessary skills to encourage more enrollment in basic education. This initiative aligns with the International Women’s Day Celebration theme, “Invest in Women,” emphasizing the pivotal role of education in women’s empowerment.
During the workshop, women shared their heartfelt gratitude towards their husbands for their support and encouragement. Juliana Akinlapa, a beneficiary of the workshop, credited her husband for motivating her to enroll in an informal learning center for adult education. She expressed how this opportunity has not only enriched her knowledge but also enabled her to actively engage in her children’s education at home.
Similarly, Asamu Aliyu Idris, a mother of four, highlighted the transformative impact of her husband’s support in reigniting her educational aspirations. Despite facing financial constraints after secondary school, her husband’s encouragement inspired her to pursue her dream of becoming a medical doctor. She vowed to make the most of the opportunities presented to her through the workshop.
Rasheeda Yusuf, Chairperson of NAWOJ, underscored the indispensable role of women in nation-building and emphasized the urgent need for establishing informal learning centers tailored to address women’s educational needs. This collective effort not only empowers individual women but also contributes significantly to the socio-economic development of Bauchi State and Nigeria as a whole.
