CurrentReport Blog The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced plans to clear shanties across Abuja to improve security and protect lives and property. Speaking to residents in the Wuye shanty village on Sunday, Wike emphasized that unregulated settlements with unidentifiable occupants pose significant security risks, especially in areas close to infrastructure such as rail lines.

Wike explained that the FCT has identified locations considered security threats and that all settlements with potential risks will be addressed to maintain safety in Nigeria’s capital. Despite potential opposition, Wike remained firm, stating that no intimidation or blackmail from any groups would deter the government from its mission to secure Abuja.

He has directed Wuye residents to select five representatives to meet with the FCT Ministry to discuss possible support options. Responding on behalf of the community, Abba Garu appealed for government assistance in finding alternative shelter, assuring officials that residents would not rebuild once the shanties are cleared.
