CurrentReport Blog In a significant cleanup operation across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a joint task force of police, military, DSS, NSCDC, and paramilitary agencies detained 34 individuals on Monday, including 15 beggars and 19 scavengers, following a ministerial directive to remove these groups from public spaces.
The operation, led by FCT Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu, is set to run for two weeks, with ongoing assessments to determine further action. Security teams are patrolling various zones, including city center areas and major roads like the airport route, Kubwa axis, and Asokoro-Nyanya corridor.
According to Adamu Gwary, Director of Security for the FCT Administration, beggars in the city center largely went into hiding, yet 34 individuals were apprehended in other locations.
The FCT Administration confirmed that detained beggars and scavengers will be taken to the Kuchikon rehabilitation center in Bwari Area Council. Those open to learning vocational skills will receive training for self-sufficiency, while those unwilling to engage in the rehabilitation program will be repatriated to their home states.
AEBP Head of Enforcement, Kaka Bello, emphasized that the operation aims to eliminate all forms of nuisance in the city, including roadside traders and illegal vendors. The FCTA reiterated its commitment to restoring order and cleanliness across the FCT.
