CurrentReport Blog The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the recruitment of 34 resident doctors for a fixed seven-year residency training program. This marks the first phase of an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare services in the FCT by recruiting 60 medical residency trainees across eight different specialties within FCTA hospitals.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, revealed that the recruitment will significantly strengthen healthcare delivery in the capital city. He emphasized that this marks the first time such an employment process is being carried out outside the Health Management Board, creating more opportunities for doctors and ensuring a continuous influx of skilled medical professionals into the healthcare system.

The 34 resident doctors who have been hired will specialize in key areas such as psychiatry, internal medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, family medicine, ophthalmology, and obstetrics and gynecology. This initiative is expected to not only boost healthcare delivery but also provide much-needed training and development for medical professionals in the region.

To further bolster healthcare services, the FCTA Civil Service Commission is set to commence the recruitment process for the remaining 26 resident doctors, who will cover additional specialties, including pediatrics. This effort is part of the broader goal to ensure that the FCT’s healthcare system is equipped with the right expertise to meet the growing medical needs of its population.

This move by the FCTA Minister is seen as a crucial step toward improving healthcare standards, particularly in light of the ongoing efforts to enhance medical education and provide residents with access to quality healthcare services. The seven-year residency program will offer in-depth training and hands-on experience, benefiting both the doctors involved and the citizens of the FCT.
