CurrentReport Blog The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to N77,000, effective from July 2024. This significant change was announced in a statement released by Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for NYSC.
According to the statement, the adjustment aligns with the recently enacted National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. The approval was communicated through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by the commission’s chairman, Ekpo Nta.
Prior to this development, the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, had paid an advocacy visit to the chairman of the commission, where he emphasized the need for an enhanced welfare package for corps members. His efforts have now yielded positive results, as the increase will provide substantial financial relief to the thousands of young Nigerians participating in the program.
In her statement, Embu highlighted that the NYSC boss expressed deep gratitude to the Federal Government for this timely intervention. She stated that Brigadier General Ahmed is optimistic that this increment will not only bring much-needed succour to the corps members but also serve as a morale booster, encouraging them to contribute more meaningfully to national development.
Before this increment, the monthly allowance for NYSC members was N33,000. The new N77,000 allowance represents more than a 100% increase, underscoring the government’s commitment to the welfare of the country’s youth as they embark on their mandatory national service.
This move is expected to enhance the quality of life for the corps members and enable them to better serve their host communities across the country.
