CurrentReort Bog The Federal Government of Nigeria allocated a staggering N8.73 billion in 2024 to enhance power infrastructure at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, according to a report by BudgIT’s GovSpend.

The expenditure aimed to ensure consistent electricity supply at the airport’s new international terminal, addressing long-standing challenges of unstable power.

Breakdown of Expenditures

The report revealed significant payments made to J. Marine Logistics Ltd for outsourced power supply:

  • N5.67 billion for power supplied between March and September 2023.
  • N2.19 billion on May 9, 2024, for services covering October to November 2023 and part of December 2023.
  • N874.42 million on the same day as part payment for power during the same period.

These payments reflect the government’s commitment to maintaining uninterrupted power supply at one of Nigeria’s busiest airports.

Addressing Power Challenges

Despite the substantial investment, the airport continues to experience incidents of erratic power supply, prompting calls for sustainable solutions.

Expert’s Opinion

Aviation expert Olumide Odunayo commended the Federal Government’s efforts but urged the adoption of alternative energy sources to address the issue in the long term.

“The airport should build an alternative power source, probably using a solar system or windmill,” Odunayo suggested.
