CurrentReport Blog In a bold move to address critical blood shortages during medical emergencies, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to establish Blood Collection Centres in all 774 local government areas, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This initiative, spearheaded by the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), is expected to boost the availability of blood across the country, saving countless lives.
Abdullahi Haruna, the Head of Media and Publicity at NBSA, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja. He revealed that the project is a significant step in tackling the recurring challenge of blood shortages during emergencies and medical procedures.
Professor Saleh Yuguda, Director-General of the NBSA, emphasized the government’s dedication to improving healthcare outcomes. He stated, “We are working tirelessly to ensure that blood needs are adequately addressed, and this initiative is a significant step towards achieving that goal.”
In a collaborative effort, NBSA has also partnered with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to establish a robust blood bank at the NSCDC’s medical facility. This partnership is aimed at ensuring adequate blood supply during emergencies and supporting other security agencies in need of transfusions.
The project will kick off in the FCT with the establishment of strategically located blood collection facilities designed to encourage voluntary blood donations. The ease of access to these centers is expected to significantly increase donation rates, ensuring a steady supply of blood for hospitals and medical emergencies nationwide.
“The establishment of these blood collection centers across Nigeria is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving the country’s healthcare system,” Prof. Yuguda added.
