On Thursday, October 26, fish vendors in Ojoo market, Oyo State, expressed their frustration with the soaring fish prices. They are deeply concerned about the ongoing inflation, which is making it increasingly challenging for them to maintain their stock for sale. Several women vendors, in particular, highlighted their struggles and emphasized that they lack spousal support, making the rising cost of goods even more burdensome.
During their protest, the women united in a chant, declaring, “We refuse to endure these hardships any longer.” One market woman, speaking in Yoruba, passionately shared her grievances. She pointed out that the price of a carton of sick fish (Eja Alaran), which was previously manageable at 30,000 naira, has now skyrocketed to 80,000 naira. Additionally, the cost of a carton of Herring fish (Shawa), which they accepted at 20,000 naira from its initial 8,000 naira, has surged to 35,000 naira. European hake fish (Panla) is now priced at 26,000 naira, and the carton of Horse Mackerel (Kote) has reached 40,000 naira, a significant increase from just last week. She expressed her disappointment with the vendors’ association, accusing them of misusing their funds and failing to address the situation effectively.
