CurrentReport Blog In a bid to tackle the increasing cases of kidney failure across Nigeria, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abuja has inaugurated a steering committee on kidney transplants. The newly formed committee, chaired by top Consultant Nephrologist Dr. Ernest Aniede, includes a team of senior medical experts.
The development was revealed in a statement issued by FMC’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Obadiah N.K. Gana, in Abuja on Thursday. The committee’s inauguration is seen as a proactive effort to address the growing number of kidney disease-related deaths, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and across the nation.
“While the cost of treating kidney-related ailments, especially transplants, remains high, the FMC is taking steps to address the shortage of expertise in this critical area,” the statement read.
The Medical Director of FMC, Prof. Saad Ahmed, emphasized that the committee’s establishment marks a preparatory phase for the commencement of kidney transplant procedures in the FCT. During the inauguration, Prof. Ahmed urged Dr. Aniede and the committee members to work collaboratively, demonstrating dedication and commitment to ensure the successful launch of kidney transplant services at the facility.
“We expect full dedication to this critical assignment, which will lead to the successful introduction of kidney transplants at FMC,” Ahmed stated while presenting official letters to the committee members.
With the rising cases of kidney failure in Nigeria, the committee’s work is expected to play a pivotal role in improving access to kidney transplant procedures and reducing the mortality rate associated with kidney diseases in the country.
