CurrentReport Blog Brazilian football legend Adriano, known for his powerful play and the moniker “Emperor” during his time at Inter Milan, has revealed a personal battle with alcoholism and a self-proclaimed obsession with “wasting his life.” In a candid interview with The Players’ Tribune, Adriano opened up about his struggles since his retirement, including the impact of his father’s death on his once-promising career.
Adriano was regarded as one of Europe’s deadliest strikers at his peak, but his career took a downward turn after his father’s passing. His struggles became apparent again in October 2024 when a video surfaced showing the former striker appearing inebriated on the streets. In his recent interview, Adriano admitted to drinking almost daily, reflecting on his unfulfilled potential in football and the stigma of being called a “waste.”
“I’m obsessed with wasting my life,” Adriano confessed. “Football’s biggest waste: Me. I drink every other day… and the other days, too.” Despite rumors, Adriano clarified that he does not engage in drug use or criminal activities and enjoys spending time at a local kiosk in his hometown, Vila Cruzeiro Favela, in Rio de Janeiro.
Adriano officially retired from professional football in 2016 and has since been grappling with the challenges of life outside the sport.
