During meetings between French and Chinese officials, France expressed its expectation that China would convey decisive messages to its close partner, Russia, regarding the war in Ukraine.
Despite France and China’s efforts to strengthen ties, Paris has not shied away from addressing China’s close relationship with Moscow, which has deepened since the invasion of Ukraine. While China maintains neutrality in the conflict, criticism has been directed at Beijing for its reluctance to condemn Moscow’s actions.
In contrast, France has emerged as a staunch supporter of Ukraine, with President Emmanuel Macron even considering the deployment of troops to the region. French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s involvement in negotiations for lasting peace and stressed the necessity of upholding international law for European security.
Sejourne’s visit to China marks a continuation of diplomatic engagements between the two nations, highlighting the significance of maintaining dialogue and cooperation. France sees China as having a pivotal role in ensuring adherence to international norms and regulations.
The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and China, with events such as the launch of the “Versailles and the Forbidden City” exhibition showcasing cultural exchanges between the two countries.
As the European Union seeks to mitigate overreliance on China, the concept of “derisking” has emerged as a fundamental aspect of its economic strategy. Unlike the more drastic approach of “decoupling” advocated by some in the United States, the EU views China as both a partner and a competitor.
French Foreign Minister Wang Yi echoed sentiments of partnership, emphasizing the importance of economic stability and sustainability in trade relations. Rejecting the notion of decoupling, Wang emphasized the opportunities presented by cooperation between Europe and China, positioning both sides as partners rather than adversaries.
