CurrentReport Blog In a dramatic turn of events, petrol dealers in Akwa Ibom State have suspended their operations, citing extortion and impounding of their products by the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association (NOGASA). The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association (IPMAN) has directed its members to close stations effective Monday, April 22, 2024. Failure to comply could result in hefty fines.
As a result, black market dealers have seized the opportunity, selling fuel at an exorbitant price of N1,500 per litre on the streets of Uyo, the state capital. This comes at a time when fuel prices have reportedly been slashed in other parts of the country, exacerbating the situation in Akwa Ibom State.
In response to the crisis, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association Of Nigeria (PETROAN) has urged its members to continue business as usual and disregard the threats from IPMAN. Chairman Udeme Esset emphasized that necessary measures would be taken to ensure the smooth operation of retail outlets.
Meanwhile, Governor Umo Eno has taken proactive steps to address the situation, directing security agencies to mount surveillance at the border to prevent further disruptions. He also denounced fake news circulating about fuel delivery withdrawal, reassuring residents that the government is committed to maintaining order and stability.
