In an inspiring move, Fulham’s Alex Iwobi has expanded his talents beyond the football field, stepping into the music scene with his debut single, “Don’t Shoot.” The Nigerian international collaborated with Ajax’s Chuba Akpom and Ramsgate’s Medy Elito to produce a track that carries a powerful message aimed at London’s youth.
A Message of Hope and Change
“Don’t Shoot” is more than just a song; it is a heartfelt plea to young people in London to steer clear of violence and pursue more positive goals. Iwobi, who has witnessed the darker sides of urban life, explained his motivation behind the song to the Evening Standard.
“Growing up in London, there is a lot of criminal activity, things that you don’t want to see or hear. With our powers, we are trying to say, don’t do that, channel it into something else,” Iwobi said. His aim is to encourage youngsters to find their passion, whether in football, music, or other constructive endeavors, and use it as a path to a better life.
Beyond the Football Pitch
Iwobi’s journey from the football pitch to the recording studio reflects his multifaceted personality and his desire to impact society positively. Despite his deep love for music, he confessed that he never envisioned releasing a song. The decision came after encouragement from friends who believed in the quality of his music.
“Whether it is football or music, anything that keeps you on the straight path is what we are trying to show everyone. I have always loved music; I am not going to lie, but in terms of releasing a song, I never thought [that would happen]. It was just something where my friends said: ‘The music is actually decent; why don’t you release it?’ So, we thought, let’s release it at the right time and not get distracted, because the main focus will always be football,” Iwobi shared.
More Than Just a Footballer
Through this musical endeavor, Iwobi is keen to demonstrate that footballers can influence change off the field as well. His message is clear: athletes are human beings with diverse interests and the ability to inspire beyond their primary profession.
“But at the same time, I am more than just a footballer. I am human, like everyone else,” Iwobi stated, emphasizing his commitment to making a difference through various channels.
