CurrentReport Blog The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) announced on Friday that cholera vaccines are set to arrive in Nigeria soon. This critical update was confirmed by Gavi’s CEO, Sania Nishtar, through a statement on his X page.
Gavi is prepared to collaborate closely with its partners, UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO), to tackle the ongoing cholera outbreak in Nigeria. “We stand ready to work with our partners, UNICEF and WHO, to support Minister Muhammad Pate, Nigeria’s federal ministry of health, and the NCDC’s timely efforts to contain this outbreak and protect those at highest risk,” said Nishtar.
Despite the challenging year marked by numerous cholera outbreaks, Nishtar assured that Gavi’s vaccine stockpile is now fully replenished and production is continuing at full capacity. This development comes as Nigeria grapples with a significant cholera outbreak, with 3,623 suspected cases and 103 deaths reported across 34 states.
The arrival of cholera vaccines in Nigeria marks a significant step in curbing the outbreak and safeguarding the health of those most vulnerable. Gavi’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s health authorities underscores the importance of global partnerships in addressing public health emergencies.
