CurrentReport Blog German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has reaffirmed Germany and Europe’s commitment to supporting Ukraine following a tense Oval Office meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance.

The diplomatic clash, which took place on Friday, saw the leaders disagree on how to achieve a resolution to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The disagreement escalated into a heated exchange, leading Trump to cancel a scheduled joint press conference with Zelensky.

In response to the situation, Scholz took to X (formerly Twitter) to emphasize Europe’s unwavering support for Ukraine. “Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians do,” he wrote. “Therefore, we are working on a common path to a lasting and just peace. Ukraine can rely on Germany – and on Europe.”

Scholz’s statement signals continued European backing for Kyiv, even as U.S.-Ukraine relations face uncertainty following the Oval Office fallout. The reassurance comes at a critical time when Ukraine is seeking long-term security commitments from its Western allies.

The geopolitical rift has raised questions about the future of international support for Ukraine, particularly with Trump’s administration appearing to take a harder stance on negotiations. With Germany and other European nations standing firm, all eyes are now on how Washington will navigate its approach to the conflict.
