CurrentReport Blog Benin Republic’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, has shared his thoughts on why the Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Rwanda in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The loss occurred at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, despite Nigeria having already secured qualification for the tournament in Morocco.
Rohr Highlights Complacency as Key Factor
According to Rohr, who previously managed the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s early qualification may have led to complacency on the pitch.
“Against Nigeria, we were pegged back by [Victor] Osimhen a few minutes before the end,” Rohr told Fraternité. “I know this team well from having coached them. They sometimes tend to take their foot off the gas when they think they have qualified.”
Rohr explained that this allowed Rwanda to capitalize and secure a historic victory in Nigeria’s backyard.
Rwanda’s Famous Victory
The result marked a significant achievement for Rwanda, who managed to defeat the three-time African champions in their own stadium. Despite Nigeria’s qualification being confirmed earlier following Libya’s victory over Rwanda, the loss exposed gaps in the Super Eagles’ preparation and focus.
Rohr’s analysis serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining intensity in every match, regardless of prior achievements. The defeat will undoubtedly raise questions about the Super Eagles’ readiness for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
