CurrentReport Blog Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has acknowledged the challenging economic conditions in Nigeria, stating that citizens are “hungry and angry.” Speaking on Wednesday during the groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Alakia, Ibadan, Makinde emphasized his government’s commitment to avoiding policies that would worsen the current hardship.
The governor reassured residents that his administration had paid compensation to landowners in Ajia who were affected by the construction of a new Air Force Base in the area. He also addressed the recent passage of the Presumptive Tax Bill by the Oyo State House of Assembly, explaining that while the bill aims to expand the economy by generating revenue, its implementation would be delayed to avoid further burdening the public.
Makinde stressed the importance of upgrading the Ibadan airport to international standards, despite some opposition. “The decision to upgrade this airport is based on data and logic,” he said, noting that the project, set to be completed in twelve months, will enhance Oyo State’s connection to global markets and improve the ease of doing business.
The airport upgrade will attract investments in key sectors such as agribusiness, manufacturing, and technology, further positioning Ibadan as a regional business hub. The project includes upgrading the runway, airfield lighting, terminal, and other critical facilities in two strategic phases.
Makinde concluded by thanking the committee responsible for moving the project forward, reinforcing his commitment to delivering a world-class airport in Oyo State.
