CurrentReport Blog As the Ondo State gubernatorial election approaches, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure fairness and neutrality in its handling of the election, scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2024. Speaking on Tuesday, Makinde urged INEC to create a level playing field for all candidates and political parties involved.
Makinde emphasized the importance of impartiality in the election process and specifically requested the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ondo State, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, who is an indigene of the state. He argued that her presence could undermine the perception of fairness in the election. “Removing the Ondo REC would demonstrate transparency and ensure confidence in the electoral process,” he stated.
Makinde made these remarks during the flag-off of the PDP governorship campaign in Akure, where the party’s candidate, Chief Agboola Ajayi, was presented with the PDP flag. The governor expressed his satisfaction with the large turnout of supporters at the rally, signaling growing momentum for the party.
He further warned INEC not to allow a repeat of the issues that allegedly occurred in the Edo State election. “We will not stand by and allow the same shenanigans in Ondo,” Makinde said, pledging that the PDP would continue to protest until a new REC is appointed.
Makinde also called on PDP supporters to take action, urging them to engage in grassroots campaigns across all wards and communities in Ondo State. “This rally is just the beginning of the victory march for the PDP,” he declared, expressing confidence in the party’s chances.
As the election day draws nearer, all eyes are on INEC to ensure a transparent and credible process. Governor Makinde’s appeal for the removal of the Ondo REC has heightened attention on the commission’s preparations, with political parties eager for a fair contest.
