CurrentReport Blog In a startling revelation marking his one-year anniversary in office, Governor Umo Eno disclosed that certain communities in Akwa Ibom are complicit in the recent surge of kidnappings within the state. Speaking at a media parley held at the Banquet Hall, Government House Uyo, the governor highlighted the concerning trend of abductions, particularly in the Oro axis, where high-profile individuals, including a High Court Judge and a Royal Father, have been targeted.
Governor Eno indicated that security agencies have identified several hotspots and hinted that significant arrests are imminent. He expressed regret that some communities view kidnapping as a lucrative enterprise, complicating efforts to combat this criminal activity.
Community Responsibility and Government Action
The governor underscored the need for community vigilance, urging residents to report suspicious activities and individuals. “These people are living among us,” he emphasized. “I want to urge Akwa Ibomites to report to us suspicious people in their communities, let us query and investigate them and know what they are doing.”
Governor Eno assured the public that his administration is committed to eradicating kidnapping and other forms of insecurity. “We have traced, arrested, and confronted people for every kidnapping in this state,” he stated. “I can authoritatively say that some communities are harbouring these people and they see it as business. We are moving closer and soon, shocking arrests will be made.”
Tackling Insecurity in the Creeks
The governor highlighted the government’s proactive stance in addressing criminal activities in the creeks. He urged parents to monitor their children’s movements and associations, stressing the potential risks. “We are taking the fight to criminals in the creeks. Check on your children; how will your child be in a place from 12:00 AM to 3:00 AM and do you think it is normal? I know there may be casualties, but we can’t allow this to go on.”
Addressing Economic and Infrastructure Challenges
Governor Eno also addressed the high cost of food commodities, clarifying that it is not the government’s role to directly control prices. Instead, he emphasized creating an enabling environment for productivity and self-reliance. To boost agricultural productivity, he declared the first and third Fridays of each month as farm days for civil servants.
Moreover, the governor discussed his Bulk Purchase Policy, which aims to assist the vulnerable rather than reducing market prices. He assured that measures are in place to prevent sharp practices within this initiative.
In addition to these efforts, Governor Eno announced the termination of contracts for four road projects due to contractor underperformance. He reassured the public that these contracts would be re-awarded to ensure the completion of essential infrastructure developments.
A Call to Action
Governor Umo Eno’s revelations and policies signal a robust approach to tackling insecurity and economic challenges in Akwa Ibom State. By urging community cooperation and implementing strategic initiatives, the governor aims to foster a safer and more prosperous environment for all residents.
