According to the bank, the hacking attempt occurred on Wednesday, a day after the financial institution renewed its domain name. This incident caused a brief interruption, leaving customers unable to access GTBank’s online services. However, the bank swiftly moved to allay concerns, emphasizing that no customer data was compromised during the attack.
“Our attention has been drawn to reports in the media alleging that hackers have seized the bank’s website, cloned it, and intercepted customers’ data. This led to widespread concern and media reports suggesting that the bank’s website had been cloned, potentially putting customer data at risk. The incident was unsuccessful and its website was not cloned,” the bank stated.
GTBank clarified that it does not store customer information on its website, underscoring that the isolated incident did not result in any data breach. The bank’s information security experts are currently working tirelessly to restore the domain settings to full functionality.
“We urge all our customers to please disregard the claims in these media reports and assure you of our unwavering commitment to safeguarding customer data,” the statement added.
The bank reassured its customers of its robust security measures and urged them to remain calm and confident in the institution’s ability to protect their information.
