CurrentReport Blog The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the abduction of three relatives of Malam Ahmed Tahir Ajobe, a former editor of Daily Trust, by gunmen in Kogi State.
The victims, including Mr. Ajobe’s immediate younger sister, Halimtu-Sadiya Tahir, were reportedly kidnapped on Thursday evening along the Ankpa-Adoka-Makurdi Road in Ankpa Local Government Area. They were returning from a community market in Awo after purchasing items for the seven-day prayer of Mr. Ajobe’s late mother, Malama Aishetu Tahir, who passed away recently.
Ransom Demand
Reports indicate that the abductors have demanded a ransom of N50 million for the release of the victims. A family source confirmed the ransom demand on Friday but noted that negotiations were ongoing, with no payment made yet.
“Yes, three of Ajobe’s family members were kidnapped at gunpoint at about 3 pm on Thursday. The kidnappers reached out on Friday afternoon demanding N50 million,” the source said.
Police Response
The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the incident and stated that law enforcement is actively working to secure the release of the victims.
“The divisional police officer in charge of the area has already deployed his men to the scene to ensure the victims’ rescue. Additionally, Police Commissioner Bethrand Onuoha has ordered the deployment of the tactical team to reinforce the ongoing efforts,” SP Aya said.
He assured the public that the police are committed to ensuring the safe release of the abductees and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Rising Insecurity Concerns
The incident highlights the ongoing insecurity in Kogi State, particularly along the Ankpa-Adoka-Makurdi Road, a notorious route for criminal activities. Families and communities in the region are urging the government to improve road infrastructure and enhance security to prevent further occurrences.
