CurrentReport Blog In a significant development within Nigeria’s political landscape, Nollywood actress turned politician, Hilda Dokubo, has been suspended from the Labour Party (LP) over allegations of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of party regulations, among other charges.
Dokubo, who served as the acting chairperson of the Labour Party in Rivers State, was suspended following an emergency meeting of the party’s ward executive committee in Asari Toru Local Government Area (LGA). The suspension, which took place on July 18, 2024, was formally conveyed through a letter addressed to the LP’s Chairman of Asari Toru and signed by key ward executives, including the Chairman, Ajalamonia Ibama; Secretary, Lole Amacheer; Treasurer, Emmanuel Ibamathe; Women Leader, Osaki Dieypiriye; and Publicity Secretary, Osaki Dokubo.
According to the ward executives, the decision to suspend the 54-year-old actress was the result of a thorough investigation into the allegations against her. They claimed to have uncovered substantial evidence supporting their accusations of financial misconduct and abuse of office.
Hilda Dokubo’s suspension marks a notable event, given her prominent status in both the entertainment and political arenas. After a distinguished career in Nollywood, where she made her debut in the 1992 film “Evil Passion” and appeared in numerous other films such as “Gone Forever,” “End of the Wicked,” and “My Goodwill,” Dokubo transitioned to politics. In 2022, she declared her intention to contest the Asalga/Akulga federal constituency seat in the House of Representatives under the Labour Party.
The ward executives’ letter highlights the gravity of the allegations, emphasizing that the evidence gathered warranted Dokubo’s immediate suspension to maintain the integrity and principles of the Labour Party. The suspension raises critical questions about the internal dynamics and governance within the party, particularly in Rivers State.
As this situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Dokubo will respond to the allegations and the subsequent suspension. Her case underscores the increasing scrutiny and accountability measures being enforced within Nigerian political parties, reflecting a broader trend towards transparency and ethical conduct in public office.
