CurrentReport Blog Ifeanyi Ibezi, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former member of the House of Representatives, has announced his support for the re-election of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Ibezi, who represented the Idemili North and South federal constituency in the past, made the declaration after expressing his disappointment with the APC’s internal issues and the party’s failure to present a strong candidate for the upcoming governorship election.
Ibezi’s shift in allegiance comes on the heels of the victory of Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu in the APC governorship primary, which many viewed as an unexpected outcome, given that other aspirants were considered more qualified. His decision to support Soludo stems from his belief that APC is not adequately prepared to win the election and his recognition of the governor’s efforts in the state.
During a meeting at his residence in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area, Ibezi emphasized the need for continuity in leadership, stating, “Soludo must go for a second term. I went on inspection of his projects, and I know he is doing well. If your party is not doing well, what will you do? Is it not to switch support to a better party?” He also confirmed that his support would immediately transition to the APGA governor, asserting, “Our support will move immediately to Soludo.”
This move comes after three APC aspirants withdrew from the governorship race in the party’s primary election, citing irregularities and violence. Among them, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo stated that he could not risk the safety of his supporters, while Paul Chukwuma cited the presence of unprogressive elements within the party as his reason for stepping down.
Ibezi’s public backing of Soludo adds another layer of complexity to the already tense political landscape in Anambra as the governorship race heats up.
