CurrentReport Blog The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has emphasized that the signing of the Peace Accord by political parties and candidates for the 2024 Edo State governorship election does not automatically ensure a peaceful election. Instead, he called for a genuine commitment to the implementation of the Peace Accord’s terms.

Speaking during the Peace Accord signing on Wednesday, Yakubu highlighted that peace will only be achieved through active efforts from all parties and their supporters.

“I appeal to political parties and candidates to note that it is not your signatures on the peace document that will guarantee a peaceful election,” said Yakubu. “It is your commitment to its implementation that is critical. Therefore, as you sign the Peace Accord, commit yourselves to the implementation and terms of the accord and pass the message to your supporters at all levels for compliance.”

The Peace Accord signing event was attended by key figures, including former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, representatives from the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, the Inspector-General of Police, the Oba of Benin’s representatives, the National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), as well as chairmen of political parties, candidates, and the media.

Yakubu stressed that full adherence to the accord’s stipulations would honor the efforts of the National Peace Committee (NPC) to promote peaceful elections in the country.

As the 2024 Edo governorship election approaches, INEC and the National Peace Committee are working closely with political stakeholders to ensure a credible and peaceful electoral process.
