CurrentReport Blog The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have made a bold declaration that Ndigbo are prepared to exit Nigeria. This announcement came on Monday through IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, in response to increasing agitation and threats against the Igbo community.
Call for Referendum
Emma Powerful emphasized that those advocating for the “IgboMustGo” movement should push for a referendum to facilitate a peaceful exit of Ndigbo from Nigeria. This call for a referendum reflects IPOB’s commitment to a democratic process for determining the future of the Igbo people.
Rising Tensions in Lagos
The tensions have escalated following an announcement by an X user who plans to forcefully expel Igbos from Lagos State under the “IgboMustGo” banner. The user mentioned a protest scheduled from August 20 to 30, aimed at driving Igbos out of the state.
Official Reactions
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has condemned the proposed protest, advocating for unity among all ethnic groups in the state. Despite this, IPOB has criticized the Governor’s stance, accusing him of hypocritical behavior and ethnic profiling of Ndigbo through actions such as demolishing their businesses and properties.
IPOB’s Stand
In a statement, Emma Powerful conveyed IPOB’s readiness for Ndigbo to exit Nigeria, reiterating their unwillingness to be intimidated by threats. He highlighted that Ndigbo would prefer a peaceful and democratic exit to maintain good relationships with neighboring regions. However, he warned that a forced and violent expulsion could lead to long-term hostility.
Powerful also addressed the Yoruba tribal groups and their sponsors, urging them to seek a peaceful solution through a referendum rather than threats of violence.
He called on President Tinubu to release IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and organize a referendum, allowing Ndigbo to decide their future.
