CurrentReport Blog Ahead of Saturday’s local government election in Kano State, the Federal High Court has dismissed all 44 chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). Justice Simon Amobede delivered the ruling on Friday in response to a suit filed by a faction of the NNPP led by Dalhatu Shehu Usman, which challenged the legitimacy of the candidates list.

The court ordered the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) to recognize the candidate list submitted by the Usman-led faction, in line with the party’s constitution. The court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the voters’ register for the October 26th election.

In addition, Justice Amobede directed KANSIEC to accept the faction’s list as the authentic NNPP candidates list, rejecting any alternate submissions. Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police and Department of State Services (DSS), have also been barred from providing security for the election proceedings.
