CurrentReport Blog In a significant move to address prison congestion, the Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, has ordered the release of 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse and Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to decongest custodial centres in the state and ensure the well-being of inmates.
The release of the inmates was announced in a statement by Musbahu Kofar-Nasarawa, the Public Relations Officer for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State, on Monday. The inmates were freed based on their prolonged stay in custody without trial and for health-related reasons.
Justice Abdu-Aboki urged the released individuals to embrace a new path of good conduct and avoid behaviors that could lead them back into crime. As a form of support, she provided each inmate with N10,000 for transportation.
The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Mr. Ado Inuwa, praised the Chief Judge’s efforts, acknowledging the importance of this gesture in alleviating overcrowding and addressing the health challenges faced by some inmates.
