Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Imposes 24-Hour Curfew Amid Ongoing Protests and Looting

Governor Yusuf expressed his regret over the protests being hijacked by hoodlums and thugs, stating, “It is with heavy hearts that I address you today regarding the unfortunate events in the names of protests, which was hijacked by hoodlums and thugs.”

In an effort to restore peace, the governor held a crucial stakeholders meeting with traditional leaders, including the four Emirs of Karaye, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya, as well as Kano. The aim was to engage in dialogue with the protest organizers, acknowledging the constitutional right to protest while urging for orderly conduct. “Our goal was to facilitate a peaceful dialogue with the protesters, and in the morning I received the protesters and received their message,” Yusuf noted.

While commending those who protested peacefully, Governor Yusuf condemned the actions of thugs who exploited the situation to loot properties and harm innocent citizens. “The protest was hijacked by thugs and hoodlums who went on looting properties and maiming innocent lives, aided by the enemies of the state,” he added.

The governor reported that those suspected of sponsoring the violent elements have been identified and reported to the security agencies. Following this, the emergency security meeting concluded with the decision to impose a 24-hour curfew across Kano State. “Under the provisions of the Constitution and the powers vested in me as the Governor of Kano, I hereby order a 24 hours curfew in and around the state, till peace is returned,” Yusuf declared.

The governor confirmed reports of casualties and extensive looting, emphasizing the state’s commitment to restoring peace and order. The curfew will remain in place until normalcy returns to Kano State.
