CURRENT REPORT BLOG Super Eagles centre-back Kenneth Omeruo has dismissed speculation of retiring from international football following the conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday. Despite playing a bit-part role in the tournament, the 30-year-old remains committed to representing Nigeria on the international stage.
Throughout the AFCON campaign, Omeruo found himself on the fringes of the starting lineup, with head coach Jose Peseiro often favoring other defensive options.
Despite this, Omeruo managed to make five appearances, demonstrating his readiness to contribute whenever called upon.
Having only started one game against Guinea-Bissau, Omeruo’s presence on the field showcased his experience and dedication to the team’s success. Alongside Ahmed Musa, Omeruo stands as one of the longest-serving players in the current Super Eagles squad, with both players previously securing victory in the 2013 AFCON.
Looking ahead, Omeruo affirmed his commitment to the national team, stating that he is not considering retirement and remains available for selection in the future. His determination to continue representing Nigeria underscores his enduring passion for international football and his desire to contribute to the team’s ongoing success.
”My focus now is going back, continue playing regularly for my club and be available if called upon,” Omeruo said
