CurrentReport Blog In a surprising turn of events, six members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, all originally elected under the banner of the Labour Party (LP), have officially defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This announcement came during the Assembly’s plenary session on Thursday, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

The defectors attributed their decision to the persistent internal divisions and crises plaguing the Labour Party at both the national and state levels. They lamented the party’s descent into a state of perpetual discord, with factions engaged in legal battles that have severely undermined its ability to effectively serve the interests of the people.

Once hailed as a beacon of hope for progressive ideals, the Labour Party, according to the defectors, has sadly become synonymous with internal strife, diminishing its capacity to fulfill the aspirations of the electorate.

Citing examples such as the Abure and Apapa factions, as well as conflicts involving the national treasurer and the parent body, NLC, the defectors expressed disillusionment with the party’s current state. They expressed hope that by joining the PDP, they would find a more stable platform to continue serving the interests of their constituents.

The defection included prominent figures such as the Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Ejike Eze, the House Leader, Hon. Johnson Ugwu, and Hon. Princess Ugwu representing Enugu South Rural, among others. Their motion to join the PDP was formally presented by Rt. Hon. Iloabuchi Aniagu and seconded by Rt. Hon. Jane Eneh.
