CurrentReport Blog Senator Neda Imasuen, a representative of Edo South in the National Assembly under the Labour Party, has advised northern politicians aspiring for the presidency in the 2027 election to wait until 2031. The senator, speaking in Benin City, attributed his advice to the unwritten arrangement that alternates the presidency between the Northern and Southern regions.

Imasuen explained that this arrangement, whether formalized or not, dictates that the North holds the presidency for eight years, followed by eight years from the South. He stated, “The battle those politicians aspiring to contest the next 2027 presidential elections will be faced with is the roadblock of this unwritten arrangement. At some point, they will agree to let the South finish its eight years, and then the North can continue after that.”

He further emphasized that, despite any criticisms of former President Muhammadu Buhari, there was a collective understanding between the North and South to allow Buhari to serve his full eight years without contest. Imasuen noted that the same respect for this unwritten agreement will likely apply to the 2027 election.

In his comments about the current administration, Senator Imasuen praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and governance, highlighting the President’s courage in pushing through controversial tax reforms despite significant opposition. Imasuen commended Tinubu for his resilience in sticking to his policy decisions, stating that many politicians would have backed down, but Tinubu held firm.

Imasuen also pointed to the President’s determination to conduct an accurate national population census, despite the sensitivity surrounding population distribution between the North and South, as another example of his courage and commitment to doing what is right for the country.

“As far as I’m concerned, we now have a president who is doing well. He has shown immense courage in standing firm on policies that others might shy away from,” Imasuen concluded.
