CurrentReport Blog Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has issued a strong warning to President Bola Tinubu regarding Kanu’s prolonged detention. Ejimakor cautioned that the socio-economic situation in Nigeria could worsen if the President continues to allow Kanu’s “illegal detention.”
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the constitutional lawyer highlighted the potential consequences of detaining Kanu, stating:
“Dear President Tinubu: It can only get worse. For as long as you continue to sanction the unlawful detention of #MNK, Nigeria will continue to plunge into a socio-economic abyss. If in doubt, watch and see what shall become of your regime! Never say you were not warned.”
Kanu has been in detention since June 2021, following his extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria. Despite multiple court rulings in favor of his release, the Nigerian government has refused to comply, keeping Kanu under the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The continued incarceration of the IPOB leader coincides with worsening economic conditions in Nigeria, with citizens increasingly voicing their frustrations over hardship and hunger. These grievances recently culminated in a nationwide 10-day protest, with a second phase scheduled to begin on October 1.
The protests and widespread discontent underline the growing unrest in the country, as many Nigerians call for a resolution to both the economic challenges and the political tension surrounding Kanu’s detention.
