CurrentReport Blog In a bid to enhance national security and streamline telecommunications services, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a crucial directive to telecom service providers. Effective communication of this directive is essential, especially as the deadline for compliance approaches rapidly.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, reiterated the necessity for subscribers to link their National Identification Numbers (NIN) to their SIM cards. This directive, conveyed through the Director of Public Affairs, Ruben Mouka, during the 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair, underscores the critical importance of this measure for national security.
With the looming deadline of February 28, 2024, telecom operators have been instructed to bar subscribers who fail to link their NIN to their SIM cards. The enforcement of this deadline is not only a regulatory requirement but also a crucial step towards securing telecommunications networks in Nigeria.
Highlighting the significance of the telecom sector, Maida disclosed that as of 2023, it contributed significantly to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), standing at 13.5%. This underscores the integral role telecommunications play in driving economic growth and development in Nigeria.
Emphasizing the NCC’s commitment to consumer rights and satisfaction, Maida reiterated the importance of creating an environment where consumers can access affordable and equitable services. The commission’s focus on ensuring service availability, affordability, and sustainability underscores its dedication to consumer welfare.
Maida outlined various measures implemented by the NCC to safeguard consumer interests and enhance service delivery standards. One such initiative is the implementation of Harmonised Short Codes (HSC) for accessing services across all networks. This measure aims to streamline service accessibility and improve user experience for Nigerian telecom consumers.
