CurrentReport Blog The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has issued a bold challenge to the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development: present any evidence of corruption against her in court. This statement comes amid allegations of financial misappropriation within her Ministry.
In a declaration made public on Thursday by Musa Abdulrahaman, an aide to the minister, Kennedy-Ohanenye reiterated that all payments for contracts and project approvals adhered strictly to established civil service regulations.
The House committee, chaired by Kafilat Ogbara, had summoned the minister in response to accusations of corruption, specifically the alleged diversion of N1.5 billion intended for contractor payments. Contractors had petitioned the committee, claiming non-payment for executed projects.
During a hearing on Tuesday, a heated exchange ensued between committee members and Kennedy-Ohanenye. In her statement, the minister presented detailed documentation to dispel any rumours or allegations of fund misappropriation.
“The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs emphasizes that all program and project payments are meticulously authorized, following established civil service regulations,” the statement reads. Approval procedures involve the Director of Finance and Accounts, with final assent by the Permanent Secretary, the Ministry’s accounting officer. Kennedy-Ohanenye also submitted supporting documents to verify the legitimacy of all financial transactions.
Moreover, the minister has filed a lawsuit (Suit No. E 500/2024) against Hon. Kafilat Ogbara for libel and defamation. “In the spirit of due process, the Minister encourages the presentation of any evidence or proof by the Committee or Whosoever of alleged misappropriation in the court of law,” the statement said.
Abdulrahaman quoted Kennedy-Ohanenye, asserting that no funds have been misappropriated in the Ministry. “As long as I am the Minister of Women Affairs, I will continue to use the resources judiciously for the benefit of Nigerian women and children. There will be no room for financial recklessness or misappropriation of resources, and every training will be backed up with sustainable empowerment,” the minister affirmed.
