CurrentReport Blog In a bold display of discontent, Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), is spearheading a mass protest against the recent surge in electricity tariffs. The protests, organized by NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have gained momentum nationwide, with workers storming electricity distribution company offices to voice their opposition.
The catalyst for these demonstrations is the Band A tariff hike announced by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on April 3. Under the new tariff, Band A customers face a staggering increase to N225 per kilowatt-hour, a significant jump from the previous N68/kWh rate. This hike, coupled with the removal of subsidies by the Federal Government, has ignited widespread outrage among consumers.
The protests are not confined to the offices of distribution companies; they extend to key government institutions responsible for overseeing the power sector. The NERC headquarters in Abuja, along with the Ministry of Power and state offices of distribution companies, are expected to face disruptions as a result of the demonstrations.
