CurrentReport Blog The Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has lauded the Nigerian Senate for halting the confirmation of appointments to the governing board of the newly established North West Development Commission (NWDC). The decision, taken on November 19, has been described as a step toward fostering equity and inclusiveness in the region.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its chairman, Isaac Abrak, the NCYP praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibril for their leadership in ensuring fair representation in the commission.

Senate Action on NWDC Appointments

The Senate’s move follows widespread criticism from stakeholders, including the NCYP and the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), regarding the composition of the NWDC’s board of directors. Critics argued that the initial appointments lacked adequate representation of Christians and other minority groups in the North West region.

Abrak emphasized that the Senate’s decision reflects its commitment to fairness, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the board’s composition.

Call for Inclusivity and Representation

Abrak noted:

“We believe this move was made in good faith to enable President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to include Christians on the board, ensuring diverse representation.”

The NCYP also called on the President to consult with Christian leaders and other regional stakeholders to ensure that credible individuals are appointed to the board. According to the group, such consultations would strengthen trust and unity in the region.

Support for Tinubu’s Leadership

The NCYP expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership and urged Nigerians to support his administration’s efforts to improve living conditions across the country.

“We assure the President of our continued support and encourage our people and all Nigerians to do the same,” Abrak said.

Stakeholders’ Expectations

As discussions continue over the NWDC board appointments, stakeholders are keenly observing the President’s next steps. Many hope for a restructured board that reflects the diverse religious and cultural demographics of the North West region.
