CURRENT REPORT BLOG In a significant move to tackle the pervasive issue of drug abuse in Kano State, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Nigerian Army. This announcement, made by the Agency’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, underscores the gravity of the situation and the proactive steps being taken to address it.
During a courtesy visit by Brig.- Gen. M. A. Sadiq, the newly posted Commander of the 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, NDLEA Commander in Kano State, Mr Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, emphasized the importance of partnership in combating drug abuse. He lauded the Army’s gesture and highlighted the potential of such collaboration in promoting unity and curbing various social ills, including drug abuse, crime, and family disintegration.
Idris-Ahmad stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy, developed jointly with the Army, to safeguard the state from the adverse consequences of substance abuse. He also called upon development organizations, stakeholders, as well as community and religious leaders to throw their weight behind the agency’s campaign against this menace.
In response, Brig.- Gen. M. A. Sadiq applauded the NDLEA for its unwavering commitment to combating drug abuse. He underscored the correlation between drug use and the commission of crimes, highlighting the imperative of addressing this issue collectively.
The collaboration between the NDLEA and the Nigerian Army signifies a concerted effort to tackle the multifaceted challenges posed by drug abuse. By pooling their resources and expertise, these two agencies aim to not only intercept the supply of illicit substances but also to engage in preventive measures and rehabilitation efforts.
“Nigerian Army will continue to work with the NDLEA on intelligence sharing, joint operation and capacity building programmes to tackle the root causes of drug abuse and prevent its spread in the state,” Sadiq said.
