CurrentReport Blog In a recent crackdown on drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant strides in combating the illicit drug trade in Nigeria. According to a statement by Mr. Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy for NDLEA, over three tons of cannabis, commonly known as Indian hemp, were destroyed in a forest located in Edo State.
The operation, which took place in the Oloma-Okpe forest of Akoko Edo Local Government Area, resulted in the eradication of 3,944.2075 kilograms of cannabis found on a 1.577683-hectare farmland. This decisive action underscores the agency’s commitment to curbing drug cultivation and trafficking within the country.
Furthermore, NDLEA operatives arrested several suspects involved in drug-related activities across different states. In Edo State, Kole Samuel, aged 50, was apprehended with 75 kilograms of psychoactive substances at the market area in Otuo, Owan East LGA. Additionally, in Ogun State, NDLEA officers intercepted Ikechukwu Obliged, a transport company driver, with 24 kilograms of cannabis at the Sagamu Interchange.
In Kano State, two suspects, Ali Amadu (27) and Adamu Hassan (33), were arrested with a total of 125.3 kilograms of cannabis, 3,400 tramadol pills, and 30 bottles of codeine syrup. These arrests demonstrate the agency’s unwavering efforts to dismantle drug networks and prevent the distribution of narcotics across the country.
Moreover, NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign has gained momentum with various commands conducting awareness programs nationwide. From sensitization lectures for students and teachers in Adamawa and Yobe to engagement sessions in Lagos and Enugu, the agency is actively engaging communities to combat drug abuse and addiction.
NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, commended the dedication of officers and men across all commands for their commitment to the WADA advocacy campaign.
